Scientists have found a use for the heat generated during glass production

Scientists from the Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU) have created a method for converting the heat of exhaust gases from glass-making furnaces into a source of electricity.

– We have developed and calculated the thermal scheme of the installation, determined the maximum power that can be obtained from the exhaust gases – it turned out to be about 2 MW of electricity, – TASS quotes the university’s press service as saying.

As the scientists explained, glass is usually melted in special furnaces at a high temperature, which contributes to the formation of exhaust gases and, as a result, a large amount of heat that is not used in any way, although it can be used. Having drawn attention to this problem, the specialists proposed using the heat generated during glass production to generate electricity. The technology is based on the organic Rankine cycle, which is used in energy production around the world.

During the study, the scientists calculated the potential thermal performance of the flue gas heat recovery system, and then developed options for the heat recovery process. To this end, they proposed installing additional equipment to improve the power supply at the glass furnaces of the relevant enterprises.
