Summary of the magazine «Tara i Upakovka» No. 4–2024

Dear colleagues!

We inform you that the 4th issue of the information partner of the Association "StekloSouz" of Russia - the Tara i Upakovka magazine for 2024 has been published.

This issue, in particular, tells about how the Russian packaging industry operates under sanctions. The results of the largest exhibition in Russia and Eastern Europe "ROSUPAK-2024" have been summed up.

The article "SANCTIONS AGAINST PARALLEL IMPORTS AND LOCALIZATION OF MACHINE-BUILDING FOR PLASTIC PROCESSING" was published in the "CURRENT TOPIC" section. The entire second half of June was marked by new sanctions in the information field. There were few direct bans for the chemical and polymer industries, however, the impact of individual measures may also affect them. At the same time, it is worth noting that the sanctions led to the emergence of investment projects for the localization of production of equipment for plastic processing and the creation of R & D centers for new products. The latter coincided with global trends. These and other important events are described in the RUPEC review.

The article "IMPORT AND DOMESTIC PRODUCTION OF POLYMERS IN TURKEY" presents figures for record imports of polymer raw materials. Russia is among the main suppliers! Turkish manufacturers are still in the background, but are preparing to launch large polypropylene plants.

The MATERIALS section publishes the article "FLEXIBLE PACKAGING PRICES IN EUROPE IN THE SECOND QUARTER OF 2024. HAVE INCREASED" According to the European flexible packaging association FPE, prices for flexible packaging materials across Europe continued the slow growth observed in the first quarter, as demand for most materials continued to grow during the three months to the end of June 2024. Prices were also affected by rising supply-side costs for both raw materials and logistics services.

In the spring, a business breakfast "Pulp and Paper Industry - Vector of Development" was held in Moscow, organized by the SRO Association "League of Waste Paper Processors" with the aim of expanding the dialogue between participants in the pulp and paper industry and government agencies. Andrey Rusanov, executive director of the industry analytical agency "Center for System Solutions", spoke at the event with a brief overview: "THE CONTAINERBOARD MARKET IS A SINGLE MARKET".

The article "SELF-ADHESIVE MATERIALS" has been published. Its authors are K. MELESHKO, A. ASHIRBEKOVA and A. GORDIENKO (JSC "LIKK"). In the modern world, the correct choice of self-adhesive materials for labeling plays one of the key roles in the commercial success of a product. Self-adhesive labels have long become not only a way of labeling products, but also a way to increase the attractiveness of goods in all areas of business, and are actually not limited to anything.

The MARKETING section contains an article entitled “POPULAR PACKAGING FOR CAKES AND BAKERY PRODUCTS” (by K. Plochennik, Packaging & Printing). What makes a customer choose a certain box or bag among a sea of options in a grocery store? Often, it is attractive and innovative packaging that does the trick. Cake packaging can range from the simplest to the most premium. The article presents the most popular trends in cake and bakery packaging design.

Kartontara LLC (100% owned by SFT Group) will launch a second corrugated board plant in Adygea at the end of 2024. The total investment will amount to about 2.8 billion rubles. This is described in the article “THE LAUNCH OF SFT GROUP’S SECOND CORRUGATED PLANT IN ADYGEA IS PLANNED FOR THE END OF 2024”

The section "TECHNOLOGIES AND INNOVATIONS" published an article "AIRSHAPE INFLATABLE PACKAGING FILM: ADVANTAGES OF RUSSIAN DEVELOPMENT". AirShape film of Russian production is conquering the market, surpassing imported analogues in the most important parameters. The new packaging material protects goods from impacts much better than conventional air bubble film, and at the same time significantly reduces the costs of large online retailers.

The article "CORE CARDBOARD: HOW AND WHERE IT IS MADE IN RUSSIA" is of interest. Fabrics, threads, yarn, film, linoleum, tape, napkins, parchment and other materials are wound on cores and spools made of thick cardboard for ease of transportation, storage and use. This is a universal auxiliary packaging material that simplifies the winding process. The article describes a number of properties that cardboard must have for their production.

Article "WHAT ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CAN ALREADY DO". The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in petrochemistry is already creating new opportunities for enterprises in the industry. V. Nomokonov, member of the board, executive director of SIBUR, shared the company's experience in this area and talked about some implemented cases.

In the "MARKING AND LABELING" section, you can read the article "MARKING OF SOFT DRINKS AND BEER HAS BEGUN IN RUSSIA" It tells about the launch of mandatory labeling of juices, nectars, fruit drinks and drinks on plant materials, regardless of the type of packaging. This is the third stage of the introduction of mandatory labeling for soft drinks, reported the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies (CRPT, the operator of the "Honest Sign" labeling).

Mandatory labeling of certain types of canned goods, vegetable oils and fat-and-oil products, as well as non-alcoholic beer, will be introduced in Russia from September 1, 2024. This is described in the article "SOFT BEER, CANNED FOOD AND VEGETABLE OILS WILL START TO BE MARKED".

Article "NEW RULES FOR WORKING WITH BEER IN CONSUMER PACKAGING". From June 1, 2024, it became mandatory to withdraw beer and low-alcohol beverages packaged in consumer packaging from circulation on a copy-by-copy basis through cash register equipment. Retail and catering establishments that sell beer in glass, plastic and tin containers must scan the Data Matrix marking code at the checkout when selling, in order to transmit sales data to Chestny Znak.

The article "BIOPLASTICS IN PACKAGING" has been published. Plastics have become an integral part of the packaging world. There is a wide range of applications for polymers. They are lightweight, have a long shelf life, and can also be used in sensitive areas such as the food or pharmaceutical industries.

In the "ECOLOGY" section, you can read the article "ROSBIOTECH SPECIALISTS HAVE PROVEN THE SAFETY OF MULTIPLE RECYCLING OF POLYMERS". Over the course of four months, scientists have been studying the recycling potential of low-density polyethylene, high-density polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and PVC. And they have proven that polymers do not change their properties after repeated processing.

Article "RUSSIAN PLASTIC RECYCLERS INSIST ON FURTHER IMPROVEMENT OF THE EPR MECHANISM". The updated EPR mechanism, which came into force in 2024, provides for a gradual increase in the mandatory recycling rate of packaging for manufacturers and importers from 55% in 2025 to 100% by 2027. Companies that do not comply with the standard must pay an environmental fee. In July, the Union of Plastic Processors (UPP) sent comments on the parameters of the EPR legislation to the Russian Environmental Operator (REO, Ministry of Natural Resources) and the government office.

Article "DOUBLE ACCOUNTING OF WASTE DISPOSAL OF GOODS AND PACKAGING HAS BEEN EXCLUDED WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF EPR". On July 24, the State Duma adopted amendments to the bill amending Federal Law No. 89-F3 "On Production and Consumption Waste". The Russian Ecological Operator explained how this will affect the industry.

The article "WHAT IS HINDERING THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SECONDARY PLASTIC MARKET?" was published. Current technologies make it possible to recycle a wide range of polymer waste, including multilayer materials and packaging. The EcoLine-VtorPlast plant can recycle landfill waste into food-grade plastic. But does this mean that the recycling industry will grow?
