Russian scientists have developed an innovative method for laser welding glass.

Engineers at VPG LaserONE have developed a method for laser welding glass to glass, as well as glass to metal. According to the company, the technology differs from common approaches in that it does not use adhesives and does not rely on traditional diffusion welding.

The solution is based on short-wavelength laser sources that form a bond in a localized zone of approximately 30 microns. According to the developers, this limits the thermal impact on the material, reducing the risk of deformation and thermal damage. It is also noted that the strength of the glass-to-glass bond is comparable to that of the base material, and mechanical stability is maintained in a temperature range from -10 to +60°C.

Potential applications for these joints include the production of optical sensors, medical devices, laser systems, and individual components of space technology.
