Putin called the waste situation a «pain point» of Russia

The creation of a system for the treatment of municipal solid waste (MSW) is a "pain point" in Russia. This was stated by Russian President Vladimir Putin at a meeting with the Director General of the Russian Ecological Operator (REO) Denis Butsaev, according to the Kremlin website.

Putin discussed with Butsaev the work of the REO, which was created to implement the reform of municipal solid waste management. He stressed that the situation with waste concerns both social and economic issues.

“The company was founded in 2019, and its tasks are very prosaic, it would seem, the organization of work, the creation of a system for working with solid household waste. But we all know very well that this is one of the sore points we have, which concerns the quality of life of millions of people," the President of the Russian Federation noted.

Butsaev said that to solve this problem, the company is working on creating a new infrastructure. According to him, by 2030, all MSW will be processed in Russia, and half of them will learn how to process.

To date, waste maps have been created in all regions of Russia, which take into account the volumes and places of waste generation. The head of the REO added that the company is also developing a digital system that will allow monitoring the situation with waste in the country.

The reform of municipal solid waste management, accompanied by the national project "Ecology", was launched in 2019. At the same time, the REO was created by presidential decree to accompany this reform. The main objectives of the project include the establishment of separate collection of waste, the organization of its processing, as well as solving the problem of unauthorized dumps.

The position of "StekloSouz" is that the ROP lies with the manufacturers of products. Glass container factories are cullet utilizers, they are entitled with this status to support and funding from the Environmental Fund of Russia.
