Belarus wants to ban bottling beer and low-alcohol drinks in plastic bottles up to 1 liter

This proposal was submitted for public discussion by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus.

The Ministry of Natural Resources explains its proposal to limit the use of PET containers to 1 liter by the desire to reduce the amount of plastic waste, as well as to support the Belarusian manufacturer of glass bottles.

The project has been prepared for two purposes:

To correct the resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 703 "On the sale of certain types of goods, catering and the procedure for developing and approving an assortment list of goods" dated July 22, 2014;

For the implementation of paragraph 8 of the Action Plan aimed at the gradual reduction in the use of polymer packaging with its replacement with environmentally friendly packaging, approved by the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Belarus No. 7 "On the gradual reduction in the use of polymer packaging" dated January 13, 2020.

The substantiation of the need for the adoption of the document states that “taking into account the global trends towards the production of environmentally friendly packaging and the urgency of creating conditions in the Republic of Belarus that will reduce the use of plastic packaging with its replacement with more environmentally friendly packaging, including glass and paper, to satisfy growing needs for glass containers, an investment project "Creation of production of glass containers using innovative energy-efficient and resource-saving technologies" was developed at JSC "Grodno Glass Factory".

The Ministry of Natural Resources notes that the implementation of this project will increase the capacity for the production of glass containers, expand the range of products, due to the construction of a modern production facility using German technologies on the basis of JSC "Grodno Glass Factory" for 220 tons per day, or 220-240 million bottles per year in 0.5 liters. Public discussion of the draft resolution will take place at the legal forum until November 28 of this year.
