SSC RF TRINITY has created a prototype of a carbon dioxide absorber for domestic use

Specialists of the physics department of tokamak reactors of TRINITY SSC RF (part of the scientific division of Rosatom State Corporation - Science and Innovations JSC) have created a fully functional sample of an absorber to reduce the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2). It can be used in residential and office premises, educational and medical institutions, sports clubs, etc.

The absorber capacity is 450 cubic meters. m / hour. The device can be presented in three versions - mobile, stationary and built-in (in ventilation).

Unlike household air purifiers existing on the market, the SSC RF TRINITY absorber not only cleans the air from pollution, but also reduces the level of carbon dioxide concentration, which is formed as a result of human breathing and comes from the street when the premises are ventilated. In addition, the used absorbent element is much cheaper in mass production in comparison with existing analogues.

“Excessive carbon dioxide levels negatively affect human health and well-being. The installation allows you to create an optimal indoor climate. In addition to maintaining a normal CO2 concentration, the absorber destroys bacteria and viruses, cleans the air from allergens, and also saturates it with trace elements contained in sea salt. We are interested in looking for partners to create a serial production of household absorbers, ”said Dmitry Markov, General Director of JSC“ SSC RF TRINITY ”, about the development.

Under the leadership of the institute's leading engineer Vladimir Mirov, the developers equipped the absorber with sensors for the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) and, when the CO2 concentration reaches 1000 ppm (parts per million), the installation automatically reduces the level of carbon dioxide in the room to comfortable parameters (<600 ppm, according to GOST 30494-2011).

“We paid special attention to ensuring the safety of the air environment, using innovative ozone-free technologies for cleaning and disinfecting air. In the context of the spread of a new coronavirus infection (Covid-19), as well as during seasonal epidemics, in which infection occurs mainly by airborne droplets, this development is extremely relevant, "said Vladimir Mirov.

For reference:

A report from the World Meteorological Organization says that in 2019 there was another jump in the growth of the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. The average annual rate reached 410 ppm. The average concentration of CO2 in the air in July 2021 was 416.65 ppm (0.041665%). Despite the slowdown in industrial production associated with the Covid-19 pandemic and the quarantine, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is still very high.

According to biological scientists, short-term inhalation of carbon dioxide in healthy people in concentrations from 500 to 1,000 ppm causes distinct changes in the function of external respiration, blood circulation and electrical activity of the brain. Measurements in offices and schools in Moscow have shown that even with modern and powerful ventilation, the concentration of carbon dioxide in offices reaches 3,000? Ppm and higher, since CO2 is formed as a result of human respiration, and also comes when ventilated from the street.
